Invisalign vs. Braces: What is the Difference?

Gain more insight on the differences between Invisalign treatments and braces to find out which is right for you!

If you want to straighten and even out your teeth to create a confident smile, you can choose between traditional metal braces and the innovative Invisalign system. Although both of these methods can help you achieve a happy, healthy smile, there are key differences to consider while selecting between these options. You will need to understand the differences to see which procedure best aligns with your expectations for the treatment process. At that point, you can decide if you want to undergo the Invisalign procedure in Little Rock or select traditional metal braces.

Aesthetic Characteristics

Traditional metal braces utilize highly visible brackets and wires to gently manipulate your teeth into their ideal position. These visible components can have a negative impact on confidence and happiness levels throughout the entire treatment process. The Invisalign system, on the other hand, utilizes virtually invisible clear alignment trays to gradually maneuver your teeth into position without impacting confidence or happiness.

Food Guidelines

While wearing metal braces, you must avoid the typical items dentists recommend their patients eliminate from their diets, such as soda, sweets and hard foods. With Invisalign, you must be even more proactive in maintaining an oral-health friendly diet to prevent decay during the treatment process. Otherwise, when you replace your tray after every meal, it could end up trapping substances that accelerate decay directly against each tooth surface.

Daily Oral Care

With Invisalign, you must remove the trays while you eat meals or snacks, which directly exposes your teeth to food particles and debris. You should commit to thoroughly brushing and flossing after every snack or meal to further reduce the risk of trapping harmful substances against your teeth. You will also need to clean or brush the trays before replacing them in your mouth. Metal braces, on the other hand, require the typical two to three brushing sessions a day, though you will likely need to utilize specially-made floss to fit around the wires and brackets.

Treatment Time

Traditional metal braces will help you achieve a healthy smile in approximately two years, if you remain committed to attending all checkup and adjustment appointments. The Invisalign treatment not only decreases the treatment time by half, but also allows you to attend far fewer checkup appointments. Since the trays follow a natural adjustment pattern, each time you move onto the next phase of treatment, you continue working toward the results you seek without the need for additional appointments.
