There are so many dental products out there that it can be hard to sort through them all. Choosing the right toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and other dental care products is key to a confident bright smile! That’s why we’ve gathered this list of our most recommended products at every price point. Because no matter what your budget is, you deserve a happy, healthy smile.
Toothpaste
When you’re perusing the toothpaste aisle, you’ll see all sorts of claims. “Cavity protection!”, “Protect against gingivitis!”, “For sensitive teeth”, “Whitening”, and “Breath-freshening!”.
To find the right toothpaste for you, just make sure that it is approved by the American Dental Association and has at least 1,000 parts per million fluoride. The rest is about preference and your particular issues with your teeth.
Just remember that while teeth-whitening toothpaste claims to make your smile slightly whiter, it can also cause sensitivity with long-term use. And you should never use whitening toothpaste if you have braces!
Our Recommendations
Crest Pro-Health Advanced Deep Clean Toothpaste
For the best all-around deep clean and protective toothpaste, we recommend Crest Pro-Health Advanced toothpaste. It protects against plaque, gingivitis, sensitivity, and cavities. And it’s also the only toothpaste with the American Dental Association’s seal of approval for protection against acid erosion. The main active ingredient is stannous flouride, which freshens and protects!
A 3.5 oz tube is usually around $3.99, making this a very affordable way to protect your smile!
Sensodyne Fresh Mint Sensitive Toothpaste
If you have sensitive teeth, this is our number one most recommended brand of toothpaste! The active ingredients are potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride. Sensodyne works by soothing the nerves in the dentin that cause tooth sensitivity. When used twice a day, it can keep tooth sensitivity from recurring!
Sensodyne is a specialty toothpaste and is a little more expensive—around $6-8 for a 4 oz tube. But if you have sensitive teeth, nothing works better! And one tube will last you about two-three months if you’re using the recommended pea-sized amount, so it’s not a bad investment.
Parodontax Active Gum Repair Toothpaste
Paradontax Active Gum Repair is formulated to target plaque and help reverse the early signs of gum damage. If you struggle with bleeding gums, pale gums, red gums, or sensitive gums, this is the toothpaste for you!
The main active ingredients are stannous fluoride and fluoride ion. Because this is a specially formulated toothpaste, it’s on the more expensive side at around $17 per tube. But if you’re suffering from early signs of gum damage, it’s worth the money.
Tooth Brushes
Manual toothbrushes work just fine, but they don’t have the same long-term dental benefits as electric toothbrushes! Electric toothbrushes remove more plaque, are more gentle on your teeth, and help ensure that you’re brushing for the proper amount of time. We recommend these electric toothbrushes to our patients daily for proper cleaning at home.
Our Recommendations
Philips Sonicare ExpertClean 7300
This is our favorite electric toothbrush. It has a built-in sensor to control the pressure you apply to your gums and teeth to prevent enamel wear and inflammation. The bristles are soft and flexible, which helps them remove up to ten times more plaque than the average manual toothbrush. And there are three modes from which to choose—Clean, Deep clean+, or Gum Health. You can even pair it with your smartphone to track your brushing habits!
This is an investment at $130.00, but it’s an excellent toothbrush available in multiple colors and it comes with a travel case, charging stand, and two extra brush heads.
Oral-B 7000 SmartSeries Rechargeable Power Electric Toothbrush
This is another excellent electric toothbrush. Its CrossAction brush head is rounded for the best rotation and plaque removal. Oral-B says that it can remove up to 500% more plaque than a manual toothbrush when used correctly! It has 6 modes—Daily Clean, Gum Care, Sensitive, Whitening, Deep Clean, and Tongue Cleaning—and a 2-minute timer to help ensure that you’re brushing for the proper amount of time.
It costs $129.99.
Oral-B White Pro 1000 Power Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush
This is a much more budget-friendly option that still packs a punch! The 3D oscillating, rotating, and pulsating brush head busts through tough plaque, removing up to 300% more plaque than a manual toothbrush! There is only one mode, but there is a 2-minute timer to help you brush your teeth properly.
This is the most affordable of our recommendations at just $50.
Waterpik Sonic-Fusion Professional Flossing Toothbrush
This is a toothbrush and water flosser combined. It has ten different pressure settings, a timer and a pacer for proper brushing, and is twice as effective as traditional brushing and flossing. With three modes—3 Cleaning Modes: Brush, Floss, Brush + Floss—and water pressure control, you’re guaranteed to get a cleaner and fresher mouth.
This is our most expensive electric toothbrush at around $200. But since it also takes care of flossing, it’s a worthy investment!
Mouthwash
One product we’re asked about a lot as dentists is mouthwash. When to use mouthwash. What brand works best? Can I use mouthwash instead of brushing in the morning? (No.)
The best brand of mouthwash for you will depend on what issues you’re trying to address—whitening, dryness, bad breath, etc. These are a few of our favorite brands.
Our Recommendations
Oral-B Breath Therapy Mouthwash
If you struggle with halitosis, this is the mouthwash for you! It is specially formulated to neutralize bad breath. With hydrogenated castor oil, sodium chlorate, sodium bicarbonate, and anise oil, this mouthwash is a natural and effective way to freshen your breath all day long. Use twice a day after brushing.
A 16 oz bottle is generally around $10.
Philips Sonicare Breathrx Antibacterial Mouth Rinse
This mouthwash is antibacterial and alcohol-free—so you won’t get any of that intense burning sensation as you swish! This well-rounded mouthwash prevents plaque, kills odor-causing bacteria, and freshens breath! Use twice a day after brushing.
16 oz bottles are usually around $10.
Crest 3D White Brilliance Whitening Mouthwash
If you want to whiten your smile while you freshen your breath, this is the product we recommend. It’s gentle, effective, and you can see the effects within a week of normal use. It’s peroxide and alcohol-free and safe for daily use!
It’s a less expensive mouthwash at about $7 per bottle.
